I always enjoy reading your posts ...Kia ora Claire

I always enjoy reading your posts but unless I am reading it wrong this one has me somewhat puzzled. Your diagram labelled 'NCEA through integrated subject and projects' is a really interesting senior school curriculum framework but the NCEA label in the title seems to suggest that you are proposing it as an assessment framework. I am not sure why it is so important to assess each hexagon. Develop the green by all means, integrate the green and the blue, go with the yellow - but there doesn't seem any need to me to assess any of that at the level of national credentialing. We only need 60 credits and each of Level 2 and 3. Draw them from the blue boxes but leave the rest alone from a national assessment point of view so that they can function to support an engaging and challenging curriculum.

As far as external/internal assessment is concerned your 'national platform (of) nationally supported peer marking and moderation' seems like a really good external assessment example that should hopefully reduce the unfortunate conflation (and therefore criticism) of external assessment and exams.

GraemeAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11591857761236781543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6044576021219205068.post-30285338677704875612019-04-09T22:14:03.175+12:002019-04-09T22:14:03.175+12:00This is fantastic! The planned teacher engagement programme never occurred since funding was not available. By default school leaders simply substituted assessment as the driving focus. Now we have a real opportunity to re-develop .the NZ Curriculum and including all that we have realised and started to practise about innovation. Please can we stop the NCEA review and look at the paradigm shifts that have occurred in education and real life. Then we can look at curriculum, student needs and redevelop curriculum that leads to appropriate assessment.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09959157750190419601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6044576021219205068.post-86917460583722182922018-02-28T14:30:11.787+13:002018-02-28T14:30:11.787+13:00Thanks for articulating that just because we have ...Thanks for articulating that just because we have a very versatile baby, it's counterproductive if we only use them to filter the bathwater!
dramatixhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11321942359284454839noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6044576021219205068.post-42614156858751724122018-02-27T22:19:11.696+13:002018-02-27T22:19:11.696+13:00Yes ☺Yes ☺Marg Macphersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02215582095705616796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6044576021219205068.post-73227358196131736162018-02-27T14:35:27.831+13:002018-02-27T14:35:27.831+13:00Love it Claire. My hunch is that if Level 1 is removed, some schools will just bring a whole lot of L2 standards into Year 11 (as they currently do in Year 10) and "accelerate" their students more, so they will then end up harvesting heaps of L2 credits, pretty much defeating the purpose of the review. I have just completed an essay for a Masters paper on assessment and, after reading widely, this is the conclusion that I came to.

Currently assessment dominates many courses - a unit is about studying to achieve a standard. A wise man once articulated that : Rich teaching and learning environments cede artifacts that can be assessed - the learning should dominate. A project of interest could cede artifacts that would show evidence of a range of achievement standards - collaboration, conversations, creativity, flexibility - all with the student at the centre.
I worry that assessment and the rules and regulations remain the barrier. The curriculum is very clear on the skills that we are to develop - not to assess (e.g. key competencies) - to encourage our students to be confident, self-managing, independent and life-long learners. However, in my experience, perceived NCEA regulations seem to trump these.

I, too, hope that the current review of NCEA and the upcoming wider community consultation by the Government, will open the conversations that might break down some of the barriers. It was interesting reading about how it has morphed over time, and in particular with the project based learning your students do. I'm very curious as to what types of projects your students undertake. I have just begun PBL with Year 3 and 4 students in my class and finding it inspiring to see how inspired they are to take responsibility for their project and learning. I'd also be curious to know about how you go about arranging your students into groups - is this something that is all student driven? But what we are doing is providing an ease in to our self-directed learning. From Yr11-13 they transition through Foundation > Incubation > Innovation with Yr 11 being about laying down the foundational skills needed to become an increasing independent learner. The quicker students demonstrate the ability the self-manage, the more freedoms they will have.

In terms of selection. That will be a bridge we will cross if and when we become over subscribed.
